You Can’t Get Everything Right On The First Day

She said the words with ease and a smile on her face. I was taking pains to spread jam on the two pieces of whole wheat bread I had hastily tossed on a nearby plate. I looked at the clock; it was almost 8AM. Time to go! I tried to hide my stress. In hindsight, I find it kind of laughable; it was the first day after all. Before my daughter had uttered that one soothing sentence, I was flustered. Water was dripping down my neck from my quick hair refresher moment and as my partner sat in his car, engine idling, a sandwich had to be made. It actually had been my first-born’s job to make it herself and she had forgotten. So I took charge, with purpose and tried not to chide her. In my mind, I had reasoned that it was partly my fault for forgetting to remind her (uh huh).

Yep. I got schooled this morning, by my 13 year old daughter. She gave me just what I needed. Her matter of fact comment put me in my place, in the nicest and most unintentional way.

I managed a smile — which more than one person has pointed out to me is a rare event. I gave her a hug and surrendered. As my loving spouse honked the horn and I watched my daughter take her time, arranging her lunch bag in her…
